Best Practices for Migrating an Equity Trading Center to Alibaba Cloud
This article presents the best practices for an equity trading center that used HyperMotion to migrate its business systems to Alibaba Cloud. Equity trading centers have extremely high requirements for data security and business continuity, making this a typical cloud migration case study for the financial industry.
Customer Background
The equity trading center is a regional financial institution whose primary business includes equity registration, equity custody, and equity trading. As the business grew rapidly, the existing IDC data center could no longer meet business development needs. Coupled with the pressure of data center lease expiration, the decision was made to migrate business operations to Alibaba Cloud.
Migration Challenges
1. High Business Continuity Requirements
The equity trading center’s operations must run 24/7 without interruption, and extended downtime is not permitted.
2. High Data Security Requirements
Equity data is extremely sensitive financial data. Data security and integrity must be ensured throughout the migration process.

The equity trading center’s IT systems include dozens of application systems with complex interdependencies.

As a financial institution, it must comply with data security and compliance requirements set by relevant regulatory authorities.
Migration Plan
Overall Architecture
To address the challenges above, the following migration plan was developed:
- Batch migration: Application systems were grouped into multiple batches based on business relevance and priority, then migrated batch by batch.
- Minimize downtime: HyperMotion’s online migration capabilities were leveraged to keep downtime to an absolute minimum.
- Thorough testing: Comprehensive testing was performed before migration to ensure normal system operation after cutover.
Network Architecture
To ensure the security of data transmission, Alibaba Cloud Direct Connect was used to connect the IDC and the Alibaba Cloud VPC, rather than a public network VPN.
Migration Workflow
Environment preparation: Prepare the target environment on Alibaba Cloud, including VPC, security groups, and ECS instances.
Data synchronization: Use HyperMotion to establish a data synchronization channel from the source to Alibaba Cloud and begin continuous data synchronization.
Testing and validation: After data synchronization is complete, conduct comprehensive business testing on Alibaba Cloud, including functional testing, performance testing, and security testing.
Formal cutover: During off-peak hours (typically on weekends in the early morning), stop source-side operations, wait for the final data synchronization, and then launch the business systems on Alibaba Cloud.
Validation and confirmation: After business systems start, conduct comprehensive business validation to confirm normal operation.
DNS cutover: Once business validation passes, perform the DNS cutover to route business traffic to Alibaba Cloud.
Migration Results
The entire migration process took 3 months:
- Migration scale: Over 50 servers and 30+ application systems were migrated
- Downtime: Maximum downtime for a single migration was kept to under 2 hours
- Data integrity: 100% data integrity was guaranteed with zero data loss
- Business continuity: Except for planned downtime, business was never interrupted
Lessons Learned
Thorough pre-migration research: Before migration, conduct a comprehensive investigation of existing IT systems to understand their architecture, dependencies, and business characteristics.
Detailed migration plan: Develop a detailed migration plan covering migration order, time windows, and rollback strategies.
Comprehensive testing: Perform thorough testing before the formal migration, including functional testing, performance testing, and disaster recovery testing.
Team collaboration: Migration is a complex undertaking that requires close collaboration among multiple teams, including business teams, IT teams, and cloud service providers.
Continuous monitoring: After migration is complete, continuously monitor system operations to promptly identify and address any issues.
